What laser treatment involves:

Having explored all possible treatment options for patients, if laser treatment is felt to be the most appropriate, she is careful to discuss in detail what the treatment involves including:

  • How the treatment it is delivered
  • What the treatment might feel like
  • What the ‘down time’ or recovery might be
  • What potential risks/ adverse reactions might result in such treatment

The risks of laser treatment can vary, but may include:

  • Varied response/ treatment failure
  • Pain/ discomfort
  • Bruising
  • Blistering/ scabbing
  • Scarring
  • Activation of cold sore virus (laser treatment will be deferred in the case of an active cold sore)
  • Pigment changes (increase or decrease, temporary or permanent)
  • Localised hair loss
  • Eye injury
  • Demarcation
  • Wound infection
  • Paradoxical increase in hair growth

The points will be discussed at the initial consultation, which then allows for a period of ‘cooling off’ between the consultation and treatment as is recommended by GMC guidance.
